Feria de Abril Teruel · Community · A Taste of Andalucía

When I heard that the Casa de Andalucía was bringing the spirit of the Feria de Abril to Teruel, I knew I had to go. I expected flamenco dresses, sevillanas, and horses. I never expected to find so much color, warmth, and joy gathered inside the city's Plaza de Toros.

Some days simply come together. The spring light was soft, the dresses seemed to glow against the red walls of the arena, and every smile felt genuine. Everywhere I looked, families were laughing, children proudly showed off their new flamenco dresses, and friends greeted one another as though this had been their tradition forever.

What surprised me most was how quickly people welcomed me into their celebration. Parents happily gathered their children for portraits. Friends wrapped their arms around one another when I asked to take a photograph. Riders introduced me to their horses, dancers paused between songs with a smile, and complete strangers treated me as though we had known each other for years. There wasn't the slightest hesitation.

Only kindness.

That afternoon, my camera became more than a camera. It became an introduction. A reason to begin conversations. A way of sharing moments that might otherwise have passed unnoticed. Every portrait felt less like something I had taken and more like something that had been given.

Looking back, I realized I wasn't photographing Andalucía. I was photographing Teruel's remarkable ability to embrace another culture without losing its own identity. Spain has taught me that traditions don't always stay where they begin. Sometimes they travel hundreds of miles, carried by the people who love them. And when they are shared with generosity, they become part of another community's story.

For one afternoon, the Plaza de Toros didn't feel like Teruel or Seville. It simply felt like Spain.
