Unity · Football

One night. One Country.

Some victories belong to a team. Others belong to everyone who chooses to celebrate them.

Unity · Football · One Nation, One Voice

On the evening Spain won the UEFA European Championship in 2024, I found myself in Plaza del Torico in Teruel, camera in hand. Within minutes, the square filled with young people wrapped in Spanish flags, singing, laughing, and embracing friends as though the entire city had been waiting for the same moment.

The celebration felt wonderfully spontaneous. There was no organized event, no stage, and no speeches. Just hundreds of teenagers and young adults instinctively gathering in the heart of the city. Friends climbed onto shoulders, flags waved above the crowd, and every few minutes another chorus echoed across the square as new groups arrived.

As I moved through the celebration, I realized very few people were paying attention to the camera. They were too busy living the moment. Many had never met before that evening, yet football gave them an immediate sense of belonging. For a few unforgettable hours, everyone shared the same colors, the same songs, and the same joy.

I wasn't photographing football. I was photographing belonging.

Some people were celebrating because they love the game. Others because they proudly identify with Spain. For many, it was both. Whatever had brought them to the square, the result was the same: a community united by one unforgettable evening.

The final whistle lasted only a moment. The photographs remain as a reminder that sometimes the strongest sense of belonging isn't built over years. Sometimes it appears unexpectedly, carried by a shared experience that brings strangers together—even if only for one remarkable night.

Looking Closer

Spain won the UEFA Euro 2024 final on July 14, 2024, defeating England 2–1 in Berlin to claim a record fourth European Championship. Across the country, cities, towns, and villages celebrated late into the night as supporters gathered in public squares to watch and celebrate the victory.

In Teruel, Plaza del Torico once again became the city's natural gathering place. For generations, the square has served as the social heart of Teruel, where residents come together to celebrate festivals, sporting triumphs, and moments of shared civic pride.
