Highway 1 · A Journey Along California's Coast

Before Spain became my home, California was.

Between 2007 and 2008, Diego and I spent a year travelling the west coast of North America. Along California's iconic Highway 1, I photographed the journey using a Holga—a simple plastic medium-format film camera whose soft focus, light leaks and unpredictability became part of the story.

Choosing the Holga meant letting go of perfection. Every frame carried an element of surprise, encouraging me to slow down and respond to the landscape rather than control it. The photographs became less about documenting a road and more about capturing the feeling of being there.

From San Diego to the rugged cliffs of Big Sur and beyond, Highway 1 offered endless moments of beauty, solitude and discovery. Looking back, I realise the photographs were never simply about California. They became a record of a journey, a way of seeing, and a chapter of my life that would eventually lead me to Spain.

In 2023, that body of work became Highway 1, my first solo exhibition in Teruel. Presented at Espacio Luvitien Galería de Arte, the exhibition invited visitors to experience California's Pacific coast through photographs that embraced the imperfections of film and celebrated the quiet poetry of travel.
