Honor y Compromiso: Las Fuerzas Armadas en Teruel desde los ojos de una fotógrafa americana Lori Needleman



What began as a simple curiosity became one of the greatest privileges of my life as a documentary photographer. Over the course of fifteen years, I was invited to photograph the Spanish Armed Forces in Teruel, documenting ceremonies, commemorations and moments of quiet reflection. More than recording military traditions, I found myself witnessing something far more personal—the honour, commitment and humanity of the men and women who serve.

As my camera quietly followed them, I came to understand that some of the most meaningful photographs were not taken during formal ceremonies, but in the moments between them. A steady glance before a parade. A silent salute. The camaraderie built through shared responsibility. These were the moments that revealed the people behind the uniform.

In 2025, that body of work became Honor y Compromiso, my third solo exhibition in Teruel. Created in collaboration with the Subdelegación de Defensa en Teruel, Fundación Ibercaja, and the Real Hermandad de Veteranos de las Fuerzas Armadas y de la Guardia Civil, the exhibition invited visitors to look beyond military ceremony and discover the quiet dignity of those who have dedicated their lives to serving others.

Looking back, I realise this exhibition was never simply about the Armed Forces. It was about trust—the trust placed in me to observe with respect, to witness without interruption, and to tell a human story through photography. For that trust, I will always be deeply grateful.
