The first thing I noticed wasn't the church. It was the dogs.

Some waited patiently beside their owners. Others pulled excitedly at their leashes, eager to greet every passing animal. Cats peered cautiously from travel baskets, birds chirped from their cages, and a horse stood quietly among the crowd, as though this were just another morning. For a little while, the town belonged to them.

I had never experienced anything quite like it. Growing up in the United States, I had never seen families gather outside a church with their pets to receive a blessing. At first, it seemed unusual. Then, as I watched the morning unfold, it felt completely natural.

Standing among the crowd with my camera, I found myself watching the people as much as the animals. Children proudly introduced their pets to friends. Elderly couples gently stroked aging dogs while they waited their turn. Owners whispered reassuring words to nervous horses, while strangers smiled at one another as conversations began over wagging tails and curious noses.

The blessing itself lasted only a few moments. The kindness lasted much longer.

One of the things I love most about photographing Spain is discovering what each community chooses to celebrate. San Antón isn't simply about religion or ritual. It's a celebration of the animals that share our homes, our work, and our everyday lives. For one morning each year, they become the center of attention.

As I walked away, I realized I hadn't photographed a religious ceremony.

I had photographed affection.

For one morning each year, the animals that quietly share people's lives are honored alongside the people who care for them. Somehow, that felt like one of the most human traditions I had ever witnessed.
