One Voice, Every Day

Every city has its familiar faces. Some become part of its memory.

The Protestor · Perseverance · One Voice, Every Day

Whenever I crossed Plaza del Torico, there was a good chance I would find him standing in the same place, impeccably dressed, holding another hand-painted sign.

It was a period when corruption dominated political headlines across Spain. His messages called for honesty, accountability, and respect for the rule of law. Some people walked past without looking. Others stopped to read. Visitors photographed him. Children stared.

He simply kept returning.

I never asked whether he believed he would change the world. What stayed with me wasn't the politics itself, but his quiet determination to stand by his convictions. Day after day, he occupied the same corner of the square, becoming as familiar to many residents as the fountain, the cafés, or El Torico itself.

Photographing him wasn't about taking sides. It was about documenting a man who, for a time, became part of Teruel's story. His presence reminded me that every community is shaped not only by its buildings and traditions, but also by ordinary people who quietly choose to make their voices heard.

Looking Closer

During the early 2010s, Spain experienced a series of high-profile political corruption scandals that dominated national headlines and sparked widespread public frustration. Across the country, citizens organized demonstrations, displayed homemade banners, and used public spaces to express their concerns.

In Teruel, this solitary protester became a familiar sight in Plaza del Torico, quietly reminding passersby that civic participation can take many forms and that even a single voice can become part of a city's collective memory.
